Modern Digital technology has transformed the process of Ball Photography. That is taking and selling photos of the guests at a black-tie dinner, a charity ball or a school prom. Gone are the days where a photographer would take a couple of frames of each couple as they arrived a the ball, then dash to a local photo laboratory to get the film processed and enlargements made of the best image of each couple. It wasn't over then either, the photographer would dash back to the ball and layout all the enlargements on the table hoping that there were some guests left who'd be interested in buying a print. Stressful, prone to problems and possible delays. Now we have digital.
A digital setup means that a number of images can be taken of each couple as there is no film to waste. These images can be beamed direct to a computer either by a wifi connection or by plugging the camera into a network with a cable. The images can then be immediately viewed by the guests on a computer screen. Groans and moans of "God, look at that chin" or "I'm blinking" can easily be seen and there's no wasted film or printer paper. The client can have another go, try different poses, mess about or just pose because they like having their photo taken. It's all easy to do, and do again and again. Until the guest is happy with what they see on the screen. It makes selling a print so much easier.
Dye Sub Printer
Next comes the final product. This can be a mounted print; modern day Dye-sub photo printers can output a lab quality print in seconds. Some printers can handle multiple sizes of print from the same roll of paper. Add in a second printer that prints large format prints and the selection for the client grows and grows. What about a keyring with the photo in it. A photo mug maybe or a digital image on a USB stick or CD ready to upload to Facebook or email to family in Australia. All of these products can be created on the night, at the ball, ready for the guests to take away at the end of their evening. Modern printing technology is improving all the time and more products are coming along all the time.
Today's technical process is so much simpler, no dashing about, developing and printing and hoping you will sell something at the end of the night. With an on-site end-to-end workflow the photographer and his team can now create a quality product without all those old stresses. Now we just have to try and convince the client that they look great in that fifth set of portraits we did for them, "No, I can't see any wrinkles. You look great". Oh Well.
