Heat Press Ink Jet Transfers

I have discussed print on demand (POD) t-shirt publishing in previous articles and discussed how you can use online systems such as Cafe Press to start your own business with little out of pocket expense and a few good ideas. I still highly recommend using these systems due to their relative ease of use and low start-up cost, but there are other options available.

I discussed Direct To Garment (DTG) printers in another article, which is what Cafe Press uses to print their shirts, and talked about the high cost associated with them. If you were to buy one of these machines it would set you back at least ,000 for a used machine. If anyone finds one out there for less money and in decent shape please drop me an email as I would like to stay on top of any declining prices in the DTG sub-section of this business. It's my opinion that if these machines were more affordable they would be the best option for people interested in the t-shirt design business. You have the ability to print out one shirt from your design template and truly see how it is going to look printed on to the fabric. There is simply no substitution for this. You can blow up your image on Cafe Press and get a good feel for what you will be getting, but when your design is printed the color palette is CMYK based, and on your computer screen the images are RGB based. RGB of course stands for red, green, blue which most people are familiar with. The CMYK color wheel is a little less known, but the one used in printing. It stands for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Key (Black). If you are uploading your RGB image to Cafe Press they are going to convert it to CMYK for the printing process and some colors can have a different appearance. This isn't a huge deal right now, otherwise Cafe Press would certainly address this issue if people were returning merchandise because it wasn't the same colors as what they thought they were getting. There is a difference in the two color wheels, however, and you should at least be aware of the difference.

Dye Sub Printer

Most of you probably know about Plastisol heat transfers which are a sheet of paper that ink is distributed on and then, using a heat press, are transferred to the garment. You can have companies make these for you from your designs if you want to do your custom shirts from your home or office, but the same problem as with print on demand arises due to the fact that you can't actually see all the colors you would if you printed it right on the shirt. So let us say you have a great design with multiple colors that you are absolutely sure will sell like gangbusters. You upload your design to your company of choice and they print 500 heat transfers with your design on them. A short time later you get the designs and excitedly press your first shirt, and it doesn't look like what you wanted. Perhaps an area of the design is too light or dark. Maybe the text is too small or the stroke of the text is too thin. The bottom line is you are now stuck with 500 transfers that you paid good money for and aren't happy with the design.

Along comes another option that could bail you out of the above scenario and save you a boatload of time and money. Introducing the ink jet heat transfer. What? Yes you read that correctly, ink jet heat transfer. You can now purchase blank Plastisol transfers and run them through your standard ink jet printer to print out your image. I can hear the gears in your head spinning, I know mine were when I first heard this. You are probably thinking you'll just forget about the print on demand option and use that standard printer of yours to print out shirts, allowing you to sell them for less money than print on demand can. Well, that was where I started going as well, but keep in mind those companies like Cafe Press are printing, shipping, advertising, and accepting credit cards for you, not to mention the fact that they are a corporate presence with a website attracting millions of customers. After contacting the company who makes these transfers for more information I put together a list of other concerns and problems.

* The cost of standard ink has to be taken in to account and it's not cheap.

* They didn't convince me that the quality was as good as their other transfers, and you don't want an inferior product out there with your name associated with it.

* How long did your last printer hold out? Home printers aren't designed to print in large numbers or last very long. I have yet to find a printer that impresses me with longevity.

* You need to make sure your printer uses pigment based ink instead of standard dye ink. Dye ink, which is industry standard, absorbs in to the paper, whereas pigment based inks set on top of the paper in encapsulated bubbles basically. I imagine it's because of this lack of absorption that the pigment is the best option.

So you may be wondering why I bring this method up if I don't believe it's a viable option. Well I think it's a great option, but not for making your shirts for sale. If you have a heat press or want to get one consider using the ink jet transfers for testing your designs. Imagine being able to print out a reasonably good quality image of your design and heat press it on to a shirt. The benefits to that would be huge!

* You could make sure the text was the right size.

* You could ensure that the colors come out the way you anticipate.

* You could show it to friends and family on a shirt instead of a computer screen and get opinions and critiques.

* You could wear your design around in public and see peoples reaction to it, complete with your website name on the back.

The ink jet transfer papers may become a better option in years to come, but right now I think it makes a great option for testing your designs. It could save you some headache and possible product returns down the road. Any questions please feel free to contact me. Happy Designing!

Event Photography - All the Kit (Part Two)

In the part one we looked at what equipment was needed to capture a photo and transfer it to a central computer. We used the workflow from a black-tie event as the basis. Now we'll look at taking the captured image and producing a final product.

The main computer system where the images get transferred to acts as the file store and also a sales station. This should be a reasonably well specified machine with plenty of disk space for storage. It's a good idea to load it with a decent amount of memory as well to keep the speed up. Event photography is about a quick and smooth workflow and the computer is the central hub that everything else links into. You will need to be able to connect at least two display screens to this computer, one for the sales assistant and one for the guests to view the images on.

Dye Sub Printer

It is a good idea to use software specifically created for event photography. This software allows the images to be quickly located and sorted and then the images can be shown on a separate display for the guest to view and choose. There are a number of packages available but mainly for PCs. With these software packages you can do some basic retouching such as lighten shadow or adjust the crop of an image. You can setup the pricing structure for the products you are offering including discount pricing for packages or multiple purchases, some will also work out total pricing and handle the printing of the invoices/receipts and keep track of the sales for the event. The software will also control the next step of the process, creating the end product.

The final product can be either a digital image or a physical print. If you intend to sell digital images at the event then you'll sell them either on CD or maybe a USB stick. A CD writer and USB interfaces is required on the computer.

If a physical print is required then you'll need to connect a printer to the system. Dye-sublimation printers provide the perfect solution. Dye-sub printers are quick, typically 30 seconds for a print, the prints are dry out of the printer so there's no chance of smudging as you may get with an inkjet. They also have a protective coating bonded to the top to make them water resistant. Dye-sub printers generally work from a roll of paper and will output only one size of print so if you wish to sell different sizes at an event then multiple printers are the way to go. This obviously adds to the cost of setting up an event photography business and the amount of equipment that you need to carry around to events.

Finally packaging the print or digital image completes the process.

So, with these two articles I hope you have an understanding of the basic equipment needed for event photography. If you intend to cover sports event or outside events then the amount of equipment increases exponentially. But that's for another article.

Lifetime Canvas Prints

Professionaly printed photos on canvas

To get your photos to last a life time you need to have them professionally printed. You will already be familiar with old fashioned faded paper photos... very charming but they did not hold their colour vibrancy. These days photos on canvas will stay color true for years and often 75 years or longer.

Dye Sub Printer

When you have your photo printed as a canvas print then its life time is assured if you have selected a good printer and supplier. Your canvas may require a little maintenance such as dusting or wedge adjustment on the reverse to keep the canvas image taught.

When you have your print on canvas you need to select the best place for it so choose the right spot for hanging canvas prints. Try not to let it be exposed to direct sunlight. So when you mount the canvas on the wall, you should carefully choose a spot that does not get direct sunlight.

Do not worry about exposed to moisture or draughts for dye sublimated canvas prints as they will not be affected (cheaper giclee ones will run however). If the frame is a laminated bar it will not warp or twist unlike cheaper wooden frames with knots and twists on which the canvas are mounted. The cheaper canvas print frame can warp due to constant exposure to draught and this will affect its surface.

Dust your canvas regularly with dry cloth or duster. If you have dye sub canvas it is best to gently vacuum them as the woven canvas print will allow air to pass meaning they can be cleaned with light vacuum or dust buster.

If your canvas images are not dusted regularly, layers of dust can settle on the surface making the picture look dull over a period of time. Once the dust gets settled on the surface, it will be difficult to get rid of it completely. On a dye sublimated canvas you can never use soapy water to clean a mark or stain you may have had the misfortune to encounter on the surface of your prints

One day when your family are reviewing your history these canvas prints will become treasured even more so this means the memories will last more than a lifetime!

How to Create a Print on Metal From Your Images

Today most of us are faced with numerous challenges when trying to figure out how stand apart from everyone else who is printing onto traditional media such as paper and canvas.

Although there have been many advances in paper stocks and canvas media in recent years, there weren't too many options outside of that realm unless you were into making your own plates and emulsions for direct transfers of artworks and photographic images to unusual substrates.

Dye Sub Printer

Today there has been many advances in the fine art printing technology and one of the most exciting and new options is the ability to print an image directly to metallic sheet, such as aluminum, copper and stainless steel.
Deciding on how to print on metallic surfaces involves breaking down some important elements and then deciding which characteristics are more important to you.

There are 3 common techniques used today for printing onto metal surfaces.

1. UV cured printers can print onto flat substrates. This technology is expensive and can produce conflicting results depending on the machine and generation of printer. The new machines costing over 0,000 can produce spectacular results but unfortunately they are outside most people's budget.

2. The other option is to use dye sublimation, also known as dye sub. Dye sub. This is a process of printing the image onto a thermal transfer paper and then baking the image onto the metal using a hot plate. The results can be very good but there can be a large number wasted pieces due to inconsistent results due to the variables involved. The metal also has to be coated with a thermal receptive chemical and therefore can be more expensive to produce in smaller quantities.

3. The third method of printing onto metal is the use a typical fine art printer such as the Epson printers that can take flat media and print onto the metallic substrate by coating the metal with an ink receptive chemical.
This process is for the most part the highest resolution but due to the sensitivity of the water based inks and coatings involved can be tricky at times. The results are stunning when using this method but the only major drawback is the fact the print has to be coated afterwards with the solvent based protective coating to seal in the inks.
This can be tricky to apply cleanly and evenly unless you have a good spraying technique and environment.

As pointed out here, there are options for direct printing onto any metallic surfaces however the one you will chose depends mainly on your expectations and budget.

The UV cured option is probably the most economical if you can find a supplier with such a machine but there may be issues such as banding, not to mention the resolutions may be low into the 400-600 DPI range for older machines.

Despite the various issues involved with each of the methods discussed above, direct printing to metal can be a very exciting and unique way to reproduce your photos and artworks.

The most common substrates are aluminum, stainless steel, copper as well as brushed metals.

You can practically print onto any other metal combination provided it can be fit into machine.

Epson printers will not accept any media thicker than 1.5 millimeters and for flat bed printer you can go as thick as 2 inches in some cases.

I encourage you to explore this new and exciting new printing technology and I am sure you will be very pleased with the overall results.

You Could Be Risking Your Life By Getting a Tattoo

The craze for tattoo making in youngsters is rising. Be careful before you think of joining this category. Individuals with multiple tattoos covering parts of body are at high risk of acquiring hepatitis C infection, a multinational clinical study warned. Hepatitis C is a leading silent killer. The majority of individuals with new infection have no symptoms until subsequently after some years when they develop liver cirrhosis or cancer. Only few individuals initially present with the characteristic features of hepatitis, such as jaundice, vomiting, stomach pain, appetite loss and fatigue.

A systematic review of 124 published studies from 30 nations found that people with tattoos had 3 times higher risk of hepatitis C compared to individuals without tattoos. However, in sub group analyses, the researcher found that non injection drug users are having almost six times higher risk of such infections. Other risks from tattoo making recognized by the research study comprise allergy, HIV, hepatitis B and other bacterial or fungal infections.

Dye Sub Printer

Tattoos have become more and more popular in current years. In the United States about 36% of people under age of 30 have tattoos. Same way, in Canada about 8% of high school scholars has at least one tattoo and 21 % of those who do not have are eager to have one. During tattoo making, the skin is pierced 80 to 150 times in a second to introduce color pigments. As instruments used for tattoo making come in close contact to blood and other body fluids, infection is possible if such instruments are used for more than one person without proper disinfecting and sterilization.

Moreover, tattoo dyes are not well preserved in germ free containers and might also carry infections, they researchers reasoned. The chemical components in tattoo dyes can be house paint, ink used for printers or even industrial carbon. This content is toxic and may enter in kidney or lungs via circulating blood. The study also brought out a new drift in youngsters to have tattooed with dark ink, the harm from which is yet to be establish.

The researchers concluded that well defined infection control guidelines are needed for tattoo artists. Also, inspections, reporting of adverse reactions and record keeping would help in minimizing the risk of infection transmission. There is a need of prevention programs with center of attention on youngsters the most likely to get tattoos.

This research brings to light the fact that tattoo seekers should get their tattoo done only from professional tattoo artists. And insist on hygiene and proper sterilization of instruments before they get the tattoo.

Enjoy Photo Printing at Home With a Small Photo Printer

Just two decades ago, people took photos for the sake of making memories and putting them in an album. This required people to buy film, develop the film, and then have them printed on paper. Nowadays, thanks to technology, people take more photos more quickly with their digital cameras. With this, more and more photo labs have closed due to the diminishing demand for such. People lost the need for film to be developed, and they figured that printing their own photos would be more efficient.

Unfortunately, people started printing poor quality photos because majority printed their photos using their ink jet computer printers, which were not made for printing photos on ordinary bond paper. printer manufacturers produced photo printers, and a great deal of these printers produce good quality photo prints. Alas, these photo printers are bulky, and in the market where consumers demand everything to be smaller and smaller, these large and bulky dye sub printers are best left to the professionals who need large printers for work. People need to look for the right dye sub printer that will suit the lifestyle that they live. In choosing the suitable small dye sub printer, one needs to look at the benefits that he will obtain.

Dye Sub Printer

Being small and compact, a small photo printer is portable. Carrying it from one place to another will be easy, since a small dye sub printer will weigh less than a net book, so it will not be that big of a hassle to lug around than a laptop. People who live a fast-paced lifestyle, have a penchant for traveling, or are always on the go will love this about small dye sub printers. Being compact, bringing a small printer for photos to the beach or to any vacation will prove to be unproblematic, since storing it is as easy as slipping into a bag with your laptop.

Second, a small photo printer requires less ink for printing. Some manufacturers of a small photo printer sell ink along with photo paper, with ink allotted for the number of paper with it. No ink will be wasted so money is saved. And unlike normal printers like inkjets or laserjets, a small photo printer is specifically created to print photos only, nothing else. This also means that the quality of the photo will not be compromised. High quality prints will be created without the hassle of having them developed in photo labs and paying expensive fees. Some printers buy CMYK ink to really provide good quality prints. But to create good photo lab-quality prints, a small photo printer does not necessarily require individual CMYK ink. Good quality paper, a decent shot from a decent digital camera, and a good supply of ink are what one needs to have quality prints.

The only downside to small photo printers is that they are usually lugged around so they can get damaged. This meager consequence might hinder one from buying, especially because damaging a small dye sub printer might affect the quality of the prints. But the benefits outweigh the cost. You'll enjoy owning one these printers.
